Besides the perfectly dressed Christmas tree and time spent with family, a memorable holiday season just wouldn’t be the same without a little chaos. In Love the Coopers, a new Christmas comedy starring Diane Keaton, John Goodman and Olivia Wilde (to name a few), a whirlwind of unexpected events forces a four-generation family to rediscover what the holidays are all about.

Beth Rubino, the film’s production designer, says the disarmingly honest plot helped shape the set design. “The movie’s overall aesthetic is inspired by the world of a snow globe,” she says. “Our worlds are all shaken up and settled at the same time.” It’s the reason Rubino, together with director Jessie Nelson, decided on a house in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania as the movie’s location thanks to its expansive glass windows that showcase the wintry landscape beyond. Rubino, who was also the set decorator on Nancy Meyers' It’s Complicated and Something’s Gotta Give, outfitted the interior with vintage accents and cozy textures to foster a sense of nostalgia.

To help viewers bring the look home, online sales site Joss & Main teamed up with CBS Films to create a limited-edition Love the Coopers-inspired furniture and decor collection, which is available now until Tuesday, November 24th. Merry entryway

Fresh greenery and a collection of snow globes infuse the entryway with the spirit of the season. “The objective was to make [the decor] as accessible and homey as possible,” Rubino says. “You don’t want it to look forced.”

Dining room design

Exposed ceiling beams, traditional brick flooring and warm wooden elements work together to fill the dining room with character and warmth. To bring the outdoors in further, production designer Beth Rubino wrapped logs in twinkle lights.

Dining room/solarium

Expansive windows transform the dining room into a solarium, allowing the snow-covered backdrop to take centre stage. “The solarium became the essence of our storytelling,” Rubino says. “The idea that we are looking through glass and viewing everything that happens through glass.”

Festive touches

Love The Coopers stars Olivia Wilde and Jake Lacy celebrate Christmas around the kitchen table. “The essence of the holidays can be seen in the little details throughout a house or through a kitchen,” Rubino says.

Kitchen design

The kitchen, with its rustic furnishings and statement pendant lights, showcases an eclectic mix of old and new. It gives the impression that the home is rich with history.

Collected aesthetic

Open shelves holding neutral-hued dishware add to the kitchen’s collected aesthetic without overwhelming the space. The strip lighting installed under each shelf offers a beautiful glowing effect, while modern grey kitchen cabinetry fitted with gold hardware lends a stylish touch.

Bright banquette

The warm and rustic kitchen also features a comfy banquette, driving home the idea that meals are a time to unwind and connect with loved ones. The food, Rubino says, should be considered “the accent or the jewellery on the table.”

Holiday traditions

“Of all my films set in the present day, this look is the most ‘get comfortable, take off your shoes, sit by the fire’ kind of feel,” Rubino says. The living room's sparkling Christmas tree, plush furniture and window bench outfitted with patterned toss cushions all serve as evidence.

Warm accents

In the living room, built-in bookshelves overflow with hardcovers, family photos and other personal items. Elements like these are what brighten up a home and give it more meaning.

Diane Keaton and John Goodman cozy up on set. “In dealing with multiple generations, this film allowed us to introduce Christmas past to Christmas present,” Rubino says. “We aimed to make the set feel comfortable and filled with memories.”
