Designer tips for integrating a TV into your decor

- Position your TV so you look directly into the centre of the screen when you're seated (the screen's centre should be 48 inches from the floor).

- If the room isn't all about watching television, hide your set completely. Buy a TV set in a mirror (ad-notam.com) or an art canvas designed to hide the screen with the flick of a remote (framemytv.com). For a more budget-friendly solution, minimize the TV's appearance with a patterned wallpaper on the wall behind it or make it part of a gallery wall to blend it in.

- For optimal viewing, the distance rule is 1 1/2 times the measurement of the screen from bottom right corner to top left corner. So, if your TV is 32 inches wide, your couch needs to be at least 48 inches(or four feet) from the screen.

- A universal remote minimizes clutter and confusion. Store it in a coffee table drawer or in a decorative box or basket.

- Go ahead and hang your TV above your fireplace! The firebox must be surrounded with a nonflammable material (usually, stone or tile) for safety. Think of the TV as a mirror or a piece of art: Hang it a few inches above the mantel.  It might be a good idea to mark the spot first, then sit on your couch to see if it feels comfortable for viewing, before you get the drill out.

- If you hang the TV on a wall bracket, hide cords by making small holes behind the TV and the cable box, then fish cords through to connect. Consider installing an outlet behind the TV to deal with cords, or use cord covers, then paint or wallpaper them to match the wall.
