Breton stripes: The simplest way to exude French-girl cool this fall

You can never have too many striped shirts, right? This season-less staple is getting extra attention this fall—so make sure to pick up one of our favourite striped pieces.

The thing about stripes is that they're always trending. Any type of stripe will do, but this season we'll be stocking up on French-inspired Breton stripes for a look that is classy, polished and just a little bit retro.

Breton stripes originated in France (Brittany, more specifically) and were part of a seaman's uniform in the 1800s. The design was alternating white (2 cm) and blue (1 cm) horizontal stripes—a look so trendy that in the 1900s it spread from seamen to the public as a chic style statement.

Over time, the definition of a Breton stripe became a little more relaxed; the term now tends to refer to thin, horizontal stripes, often still in the classic white and blue colour combo. If you want to exude that French-girl cool, we recommend sticking with the classic look, but you'll still be on trend this fall by choosing striped items with variations of colour and thickness.

Here are our striped picks for fall.
