Fashion closet makeover: Project runway ELLE Canada

Our head-to-toe makeover of Elle Canada’s fashion closet is getting rave reviews – come inside and take a peek.

When we think of the closets of top fashion magazines, we envision row upon row of gorgeous designer heels, racks of couture right off the runway and the hottest accessories, all beautifully organized and safely secured under lock and key. So when our sister publication Elle Canada came to us with a plea to breathe much-needed life into their dark and nonfunctional closet, we couldn’t wait to dive in.

Using some crafty creativity and a little help from the organizational masters at IKEA, our design team created a chic space that will always be in style.

Before

The previous layout of the closet was dreary, dim-lit, and non-functional, but after the much-needed renovation its become bright, vibrant and full of life.

Work of art

The Style at Home design team knows the importance of dressing up walls, even in a closet. To add a decorative touch to the room, they created artwork using some of Elle Canada’s fashion photography and hot pink washi tape. Bonus: Editors can change up the images as often as they like.

Front-row seats

A pedestal table and a few Scandi-style chairs provide a spot for impromptu meetings and photo-shoot prep. The furniture’s airy silhouette and white finish blend seamlessly into the space and lend it a trendy modern vibe.

Backup star

A deep shelving unit was incorporated in one corner to exhibit haute handbags. To make the display a little more interesting, the back of the unit was covered with the same Thibaut wallpaper design that was used on the walls. “It really ties the whole space together,” says Morgan.

Closet lighting

As any fashionista knows, good lighting is key. The design team adorned hanging racks with IKEA’s Jansjö spotlights. Flexible arms and clip-on bases mean the lights can be adjusted as needed to highlight of-the-moment pieces, whether they’re striped, sequined or satin.

Animal activist

Thibaut’s playful Tanzania wallpaper pattern caught the Elle Canada team’s eye. “They loved how it was a fun take on an animal print,” says Style at Home associate design editor Morgan Lindsay. “It adds the perfect dose of pattern to the room, so I’m really glad they chose it!”

Made up

Pullout trays with felt inserts corral an ever-rotating collection of beauty supplies. “The trays are actually meant for jewellery, but we thought outside the box and liked the idea of utilizing their small compartments for things like nail polishes and lipsticks,” says Style at Home senior style editor Ann Marie Favot.

Shoe organizer

A sliding door now protects the impressive designer shoe collection. The trays pull out completely and boast heel rails, so chic stilettos and pretty pumps are always putting their best foot forward. We can’t help but imagine how impressed stylish footwear fanatic Carrie Bradshaw would be with this very fashionable selection.

Model behaviour

The Elle Canada team needed accessories and jewellery to be visible and easy to grab for styling ensembles on the fly. The clear dividers of IKEA’s Komplement pullout trays were the perfect solution.
